A quick and fun portrait of Finrod Felagund, drawn on a class trip and painted with Daniel Smith & Schmincke watercolours on Canson Vidalon paper. (I just love that rough texture.)
Beautifully matted prints available here.

Thank you for adding the product names. I know Canson and was hesitant about purchasing, but I’ll definitely go for it and the watercolours you mentioned next time. x
You’re welcome! Watercolour paper is often a very tricky issue – for example, many people love Fabriano and Arches, and I can’t get them to work for me at *all*. It’s always a good idea to buy small quantities and see if it works for you.
Thank you again. I will do that and see if it will end my frustration with watercolour paper.
What were your previous problems with it? I’ve tried so many, maybe I can help.
Just that the paper wouldn’t grab the paint and it just sat on top. I use acrylics now, as they’re more versatile, but I’d really like to try watercolours sometime soon. Thank you.
Hm, then Arches might indeed be for you? It soaks up water and pigment better than Canson does.
I’ll talk to the supplier because I’m sure I’ve used Arches watercolour boards before (pastel chalk) and thought it was a bit sucky. Maybe it is a no win situation?
Some suppliers offer sample blocks – that might be an idea!
I hear you. I’ve seen the sample blocks many times but didn’t think to ask. They’re lovely and spoil me a bit so I know it will not be a problem. Fabulous idea and thanks a milion trillion for that! You’re so super nice. x
Aw. You’re welcome!
I love your Tolkien art! My sisters and I found you on DeviantArt years ago and we’ve been fans since! Excited to follow on here! :)
(breathes) He’s beautiful!
